Common Metal Cutting Methods

Metal cutting is used to transform a larger metal piece into small parts. There are different methods that can achieve this but they come with different pros and cons. It all depends on the requirements for the final result.

You can cut different sizes and shapes. There are different types of saw cutting as well that include band saw cutting and circular saw cutting. A circular blade will cut material by spinning when it comes to circular sawing. A uniform cutting action is executed in band sawing where a straight blade is used. You can reduce wastage with sawing as you can carry out close tolerance cutting. You can also cut the metal items quickly which contributes to a lower project cost. This method can be used for brass, aluminium, bronze, copper, stainless steel etc. in plate, pipe, tube and bar forms. It can be a little difficult to saw thinner materials as it is difficult to keep it stable.

Laser cutting uses a high powered beam of light that will melt and cut the metal. There is no direct contact in this method and it can also carry out delicate work such as engraving or etching. Laser cutting is a computerised process which allows for a higher level of precision and accuracy. The maintenance costs for laser machines are quite low and as the work is computerised, there is a higher level of safety in the workplace. Laser can be used on a variety of materials in addition to metal. But this will not be a good method for heat sensitive materials as it will cause deformation.

Shearing uses a moving upper blade and a lower blade that stays in position to cut metal. This is a versatile cutting method and you can also use this method to bend, press and punch metals. There is little to no wastage from this method which can bring down material costs. However, it is most suited for sheets or plated metals. Hollow materials are not recommended for this method as they can deform during the process and thicker materials will be difficult to cut.

Waterjet cutting uses pressurised water to cut metal into the required size. In addition to the high pressure water, there can also be abrasives added to improve the cutting process. Even a very thick material can be easily cut with this method. This is a cold cutting method and prevents heat distortion of materials. There is also less wastage produced. It can cut thicker products compared to laser cutting machines. For example, it can cut up to a maximum thickness of 6 inches. You can use brass, steel, titanium, aluminium etc.
